This thrid excerpt has the most difficult music, chiefly because it is unknown to many players. The first section is similar in character to the parallel section in excerpts 1 and 2 - clear, crisp playing with a sense of the strong beats and the player leading toward the strong subdivisions. The problem comes at the final section marked piu mosso. After the first eight bars of the piu mosso, many editions have 11 bars of rest for the trombone. But this should not be! Rossini's manuscript contains a lot of short hand at that point in the score, but one thing he is clear about: at that moment, he writes, "Trombone col Bassi" or, "Trombone with the basses." There is one edition which does have this important (and difficult) passage in the trombone part, but most editions omit it. I have included it here so players will be aware of it in case they come across it.
