Refer to my notes for the minor version of the Ride of the Walküre for my comments on playing this excerpt.
Players often see this excerpt in several different formats; the confusion results from the fact that the passage actually occurs twice in the opera. Once, the passage includes all the notes printed above but ends on an eighth note b natural in measure 18; the other time it is played as written without the notes in parentheses. Each version has its difficulties (it may even be more difficult to count the rests accurately than to play the notes) so practice it both ways. My suggested breath mark in measure 17 allows for a continuous line in that measure and the ability to hold out the final note full value (and volume).
This passage was originally written for bass (not contra-bass) trombone.
You can hear me play this excerpt on the 1984 audition tape which I made for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The recording may be found in mp3 format on the Douglas Yeo Boston Symphony Orchestra Audition Tape page of this website.
