THE BASS TROMBONIST'S ORCHESTRAL HANDBOOK

R. STRAUSS: Till Eulenspiegel - Excerpt 2

This passage shows fast, loud and relatively high register tonguing and has sent many an audition candidate home packing. Practice this with a metronome slowly at first, gradually working up to the proper tempo.

The words, "immer ausgelassener und lebhaft" are roughly translated, "getting more and more hilarious, rompy or jolly, and lively" (my thanks to Chris Mayer for his help on translating the fine nuance of this phrase) so make sure our playing reflects that character - and that we don't simply pound away at the eighth notes.

The accents in measures 15-20 are as Strauss wrote them - most excerpt books and even most editions of the score have additional erroneous accents in the bass trombone part (note that the accents clearly outline the "Till Eulenspiegel" five-note theme). In order to make the accents come out more clearly, note the dynamics in parentheses which will help bring out the accented notes.

Get a good breath in measure 22 (start breathing IMMEDIATELY) and do not take a breath in measures 24-30. Back off 10% on the long, held a natural so you can add a slight crescendo into the last note.
